Maxwell Porter Paris: Frequently Asked Questions
Is it a boy or a girl?
Boy.
How old?
Two weeks and four days.
He has a very grown-up name, doesn't he?
Well, he's going to spend most of his life grown up.
Is he a good baby or a bad baby?
I've met unhappy babies, crying babies, colicky babies, and dissatisfied babies, but I've never met a bad baby. I'm trying to reserve comprehensive moral judgment until the age of accountability, which is about 23 months...and geez, do we have bad toddlers!!
How was labor and delivery?
It hurt, and then it hurt a bit more, and then it hurt ALOT more, and then he was born.
How are Max's big brothers handling his presence?
They're doing great. Max and Ruby have similar aversive expressions on their faces when they sense Oliver and Wesley approaching, but O and W are not mad or intentionally mean. Just overenthusiastic with eye-poking, soft-spot prodding, mouth-jabbing, taking off blankets and hats, and abdomen-squeezing.
What are we going to do with such a cute baby? How cute is he? Oh, how small are you? You're pretty sleepy, huh? Does your mommy just love you?
I'm pretty sure these FAQs are rhetorical. If you've asked me any of these and I didn't respond, try using your grown-up voice next time.

What's in a name?
Why did we choose the names we did?
Ian - because we liked it. Also James' uncle's name.
Williams - my maiden name.
Simon - because we liked it.
Lucht - my mom's maiden name.
Gordon - James' grandpa.
Porter - James' mother's maiden name.
Oliver - because we liked it. It's also my paternal grandpa's name.
Williams - my maiden name.
Wesley - because we liked it. (Once I start teaching at a college of Wesleyan heritage this fall, perhaps I'll drum up a more religious reason for our choice!). It's also my great-uncle's name.
James - dad's name.
Maxwell - because we liked it.
Porter - James' mom's maiden name.
Ruby - because we liked it (meow).
